Yose Guide: Rakugo Theaters in Tokyo, Kansai and Beyond

The easiest way to enjoy rakugo is at a yose, a traditional variety theater with shows every day. This guide covers Tokyo's four full-time yose as well as theaters in Kansai, Nagoya and Yokohama, with locations, directions and typical prices. Prices and times can change, so please check each theater's official website for the latest information before you go.

What is a yose, and what is a joseki?

A yose is a theater where you can enjoy a continuous program of live performances centered on rakugo (comic storytelling), along with manzai (comic duos), magic, acrobatics and other acts. A yose that holds shows almost every day of the year is called a joseki, or full-time yose.

Tokyo has four joseki: Suzumoto Engeijo in Ueno, Shinjuku Suehirotei, Asakusa Engei Hall and Ikebukuro Engeijo. The lineup changes every ten days. The 1st to the 10th of the month is called kamiseki (the first period), the 11th to the 20th nakaseki (the middle period), and the 21st to the 30th shimoseki (the last period).

The prices listed here are typical prices for regular shows as shown on each theater's official website as of October 2026. Times and prices change for special programs and New Year shows, so always check the official website for the latest information.

Yose in Tokyo

Performers at Tokyo's joseki belong to one of two organizations: the Rakugo Kyokai (Rakugo Association) and the Rakugo Geijutsu Kyokai (Rakugo Arts Association). At Shinjuku Suehirotei, Asakusa Engei Hall and Ikebukuro Engeijo, the two associations take turns every ten days, while Suzumoto Engeijo features Rakugo Kyokai performers. Part of the fun is that the lineup changes completely depending on which association's shibai (run of shows) is on.

Kokuritsu Engeijo (National Engei Hall) in Hayabusacho, Chiyoda-ku, closed at the end of October 2023 for the redevelopment of the National Theatre. It continues to hold its own programs, such as the Kokuritsu Engeijo Yose series, at other venues including Sumida Triphony Hall, the Fukagawa Edo Museum in Koto-ku, and the Shibuya Cultural Center Owada.
